Rendezvous is
a service that Vivatech Incorporated provides that
allows a DriveShare client and server to access each
other when one or both systems are behind a NAT (Network
Address Translation, which allows a router to act
as an agent between the Internet and a local network).
The problem with NAT is that it relies on an outbound
connection being instigated by the host computer and
a system across the Internet cannot directly access
a system behind a NAT router. This is where Rendezvous
comes in. Two systems each connect to our server at
the office. When only one device is using NAT we simply
tell it to connect to the other system. When both
devices are using NAT we can either proxy the connection
(additional services charges may apply) or, in many
cases, use an IP handoff technique.
Using Rendezvous is simple. You just register at Vivatech
for the service, enter your user name and password
on the server and client. The server will automatically
detect when you need assistance to make a connection.
The DriveShare server will show Rendezvous all the
shares that it currently has and when you connect
with a client all those shares will be available.
Also, Rendezvous will allow you to access files via
a secure web server (so you will not have to download
or install the client if you just need to get or drop
off a few files) and future enhancements will allow
you to search all the files you have access to and
to set 'watches' for files and information. When a
watch is triggered an email or instant message will
be sent telling you of its availability.
DriveShare Installation
Ease of installation: Simply provide the host, user,
pass and let DriveShare do the rest. It will attempt
to log into the server in a variety of ways, find
out what OS is in use, provide you with a choice as
to how to make a connection to the server and then
install the appropriate server software for your OS.
Installation is easy:
- Simply install the service on both machines, select
a user name, password and a directory to share.
- Give the address of the remote DriveShare server
or have it scan your local network for all servers
that are currently running.
- Log in to the remote server with your user name
and password.
- Select the directory you want attached to your
local system.
Note: More advanced configurations allow you to create
multiple users, group them and select multiple paths
for the users/groups to join.
